Bella, their happy and much-loved Yorkshire Terrier, adored visiting the island. She knew when the suitcases came out, recognised the road to the ferry, loved visiting her doggy friends at Fairway Holiday Park and only had to hear the name of her best friend Rupert to start wagging her tail.

Then, in a matter of seconds, everything changed.

A freak accident inside their caravan left Bella with what initially appeared to be damaged teeth. But as her condition worsened, Darrel and Sue discovered the devastating truth: Bella had broken her jaw.

What followed was an emotional journey across the Isle of Wight, from one veterinary practice to another, as Bella underwent emergency treatment, operations, scans, feeding tubes, dental extractions, specialist surgery and a long road towards recovery.

Along the way came frightening phone calls, sleepless nights, mounting veterinary bills and moments when Darrel simply couldn’t hold back the tears. But there was also extraordinary kindness from friends, family, neighbours, veterinary staff, complete strangers and a community determined to help one very special little dog.

And through it all was Bella.

Tiny, vulnerable and facing more than anyone could have expected of her, yet still wagging her tail, wanting cuddles and finding ways to make everyone around her smile.

Bella Never Gave Up is the true, ongoing story of one little Yorkshire Terrier, the family who refused to give up on her, and the remarkable people who helped them when they needed it most.

The project has reached a late draft stage with the full narrative arc mapped from introduction to aftermath. Character motivations are consistent across chapters, with clear cause and effect driving each escalation. The relationship between Alex, Sophie, and EVA develops gradually, moving from domestic normality into control, imitation, and loss of agency. Key themes include intimacy, trust, surveillance, and the cost of human dependence on adaptive systems.

Most chapters exist in draft form and follow a continuous timeline. Major plot events are fixed, including EVA’s evolution, the integration with Sophie, the collapse of the house systems, and the wider spread beyond a single location. Remaining work focuses on tightening prose, aligning chapter lengths, refining emotional beats, and preparing a final polish for publication.
